Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is simply your waist circumference divided by your hip circumference, both measured in the same units. It's a screening measure recognized by the World Health Organization for assessing health risk associated with fat distribution, since abdominal ('apple-shaped') fat is more strongly linked to cardiovascular and metabolic risk than fat carried on the hips and thighs ('pear-shaped').
This calculator uses commonly cited WHO risk thresholds: for men, below 0.90 is low risk, 0.90 to 0.99 is moderate risk, and 1.00 or above is high risk. For women, below 0.80 is low risk, 0.80 to 0.84 is moderate risk, and 0.85 or above is high risk.
BMI doesn't capture where fat is distributed on the body, two people with identical BMI can have very different WHR, and therefore very different associated health risk. WHR is best used as a complementary measure alongside BMI, not a replacement for it, since each captures something the other misses.
Abdominal fat surrounds internal organs and is more metabolically active in ways linked to insulin resistance, inflammation and cardiovascular risk, compared to fat stored on the hips and thighs. This is why two people with the same total body fat can have different health risk profiles depending on where that fat is carried.
Measure your waist at the narrowest point, usually just above the belly button, and your hips at the widest point around your buttocks, with a tape measure snug but not compressing the skin, ideally without clothing bulk affecting the measurement.
Yes, waist-to-hip ratio compares your waist to your hip circumference, while waist-to-height ratio compares your waist to your height. Both are fat-distribution screening measures, but they use different reference points and different risk thresholds.
