This tool re-encodes your image as JPEG at an adjustable quality level using canvas rendering built into every modern browser, lower quality produces a smaller file at the cost of some visual detail. If your source image has transparency, transparent areas are filled with white, since JPEG doesn't support transparency.
Browsers only expose an adjustable lossy quality setting for JPEG (and WebP) when re-encoding via canvas, PNG re-encoding is always lossless with no size-quality tradeoff. Standardizing on JPEG output gives predictable, meaningful compression regardless of your source format. If you specifically need a compressed WebP file, use our JPG to WebP or Image Resizer tools with a lower quality/resolution instead.
80-90% typically gives a good balance of visibly minimal quality loss with a solid file size reduction. Go lower (50-70%) for a much smaller file where some quality loss is acceptable, like thumbnails.
The output will be a JPEG with transparent areas filled white, since JPEG has no transparency channel. If you need to keep transparency, this tool isn't the right fit, consider resizing instead.
